Fundraising while shooting
Nancy Watzman
Today the Senate voted narrowly to reject a provision that would have allowed people to carry concealed weapons from state to state, a major defeat for the gun lobby. Here at Party Time we've long noted that a number of lawmakers like to fundraise while skeet shooting (click here to see invitations) or dove or pheasant hunting (Click here).

Is there a correlation between fundraising-while-shooting and how senators voted? Most of our hunting and shooting invites turn out to be for members of the House; however, among the few senators for whom we have events listed, yes, there is! (The vote--Roll Call number 237--was 58 to 39; 60 votes were needed to win.)
- Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) voted "YES"--his fifth annual Oklahoma dove hunt is scheduled for this September.
- Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) voted "YES"--we've got an invitation from last summer for the Crapo First Annual Shoot-Out at the Prince George's County Trap & Skeet Center. The host was Will Hollier, a former staffer turned lobbyist.
- Here's an 2006 invite for a pheasant hunt benefiting Restore America PAC, Sen. Sam Brownback's (R-KS) leadership PAC. He's retiring at the session's end. Brownback voted "YES".
